The 1999 BEAmer Story Awards

Howdy! Welcome to the 1999 BEAmer Story Awards, the second annual awards given to the cream of the crop of BE stories, presented by the BE Archive.

Special Awards

This year, we have a special addition to the BEAmers! A loyal fan suggested we should try to have a little extra reward for BEAmer winners, so this year, thanks to the generosity and artistic talent of BE Artist Prinz Eugen, two of the winning stories have been illustrated! Yes, check out the new illustrations in the winners of the "Short Story" and "Novella" competitions below, and send a huge thank you to Prinz for his wonderful artwork!

How the Awards Were Calculated

Initial awards categories were selected by the Archivist, and the nominating ballot was posted in the archive. Nominations were accepted from BE professionals (contributors in the BE field: authors, morphers, archivists, etc), after which the top 5-7 nominees in each category were declared finalists. Categories which received fewer than 5 nominations were dropped. Then, with voting open to the public, hundreds of visitors to the BE Archive took the time to fill out a ballot and vote in the 16 categories. While most people voted in all categories, some chose not to do so, which results in some categories below having vote totals which add up to less than 100%.

BE Hall of Fame: (tie)
Anthony Cotto, and Bust Artist

The BE Hall of Fame Award recognizes people whose contributions to BE fandom have made them deserving of a position in the all-time BE Hall of Fame, to be remembered for as long as our fetish shall survive on the Internet. Current members include Al (editor of R&D/author of the St Cats series).

Anthony Cotto was the owner of the original archive of breast expansion material on the Internet. His ftp site at Netcom became legendary amongst the BE community years before the web even existed. Anthony often raised eyebrows at Netcom with the high amount of traffic his site created (this was at a time when the Internet was really nothing more than some universities and government institutions networked together), but he persevered for years until around 1995, when the skyrocketing bandwidth charges from Netcom and the general hassle of running a hugely popular adult-material site for free caught up with him, and his ftp site closed for good.

Acotto (his netcom ID, and the name of his ftp site) contained the first public archive of R&D (which was then an emailed newsletter, not a web site), the first public archives of morphed BE photos, and the first public BE story archive. It's hard to imagine now, but before Acotto came along, you had to scan through news archives (and this was before Deja News!) to find juicy BE stories, or hope Al found out about them and wrote about them or included them in R&D. Those of us who have been in the BE community for five or more years probably owe our community itself to Anthony, who provided the first real "meeting place" where we could share our fetish with others of the same mind. Sharing stories and morphs is what the BE community is all about, and Acotto was the first to make it possible, and the founding forefather of a chain of archives which eventually led to today's BEA.

Bust Artist is one of the longest-working BE artists in BE fandom. His legendary "comix" series dates back to the late 80's. While Dr. Ivan and Dr. Enlarge worked hard at morphing photos to enlarge sexy women in the early days of fandom, Bust Artist was the first to draw his own, or at least the first to do so with real talent. His art has matured over the years, but has always been notable for its incredible women, realistic backgrounds, and magical situations. In recent years, his interests have begun to shift to photo manipulations over drawn art, but he'll always be remembered fondly in the BE community as the first really great BE artist. His most famous works are:

  • The "Comix" series detailing the adventures of a wish-granting guy who's into big breasts.
  • The "Fantities" series of ultra-realistic photo/art morphs, with mini-stories attached.
  • The "Enhanced Realtities" series of photo morphs he has been working on for the past couple of years.
In June 2000, Bust Artist made BE history by proposing to Juliekat, a BE author and fellow BE fan. She said yes, and they are now engaged to be married. A BE artist marrying a BE author? A match made in heaven, I'd say...

Congratulations

to all the winners!

And a big thank you to all who voted - thanks for your efforts in helping recognize excellence in the BE community! For all the nominees and finalists who didn't win, remember that every vote you got signifies someone out there who felt your story was literally the best story of the year. And there's always next year - so write more and let's make 2000 an even better year for BE fiction!

Eligibility

In order to be eligible, a story must have been published for the first time in the calendar year 1999. It need not have appeared on the BEA, but it must contain BE elements or themes. Stories from commercial publications (Score, Juggs, etc) were eligible, as were stories posted on other sites (Wren Spot, Diana the Valkyrie, etc). Stories which were published in multiple parts (such as "Foobar Part 1" and "Foobar Part 2") were considered to be one long story. Stories published in multiple parts but not yet complete were considered to be Continuing Series, as were stories which are labelled as being part of an overall series structure (such as the St. Cats stories).

Fans could only vote for one story or person in each category. The totals of percentages of votes in some categories will vary due to some voters not voting in some categories. No more than one ballot was accepted per person. Voting took place from February 2 - May 20, 1999. Winners were announced July 1.
